CLEARWATER, Fla. – Forty-three children per day or 15,780 children per year are expected to be diagnosed with cancer according to the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Only four percent of federal government cancer research funding goes to children. That’s why Michele Smith, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and lead analyst for ESPN, is teaming up with the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation for a weekend of competitive college softball to raise money to help such an important organization do more research in the fight against childhood cancer. The Michele Smith Pediatric Cancer Foundation Invitational will span three days from Feb. 17-19, taking place at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater. The Michele Smith Invitational kicks-off five consecutive weekends of tournaments between 48 NCAA teams, including nationally ranked teams.
Athletes and coaches from some of the largest NCAA Division I softball teams will compete in the tournament. See top teams like Wisconsin, USF, Oklahoma State, James Madison and more play ball. Three teams that competed in the invitational last year went on to play in the College World Series.
This year’s Michele Smith Invitational will also support Clearwater for Youth, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making sure no child is turned away due to financial concerns and elevating youth sports in our community and beyond.
Come out and see some of the best college softball teams compete in the bright and beautiful Clearwater sun, all while supporting the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. For more information, visit SoftballForACure.com.
